Welcome to the WHS Specialist College May Newsletter...
Welcome to the May edition of our college newsletter!
As we approach the May half term, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what has been a truly inspiring and successful few weeks here at WHS Specialist College. This half term has been full of creativity, growth, and meaningful achievement, and we are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made both in and out of the classroom.
Our careers provision continues to go from strength to strength, with the college successfully completing its first careers quality assurance review. Students have taken part in a wide range of experiences—from a photography workshop at SMJ Falconry to the Production Futures event at the AO Arena—gaining invaluable insights into creative and digital industries. We’re also excited to see students preparing for supported internships and engaging in personalised careers guidance.
In academic subjects, students have shown fantastic dedication as they prepared for their GCSE and Entry Level exams. Science students revisited practical's at Brighouse High School, while Maths students impressed us with their commitment during intensive revision workshops. In English, students have been exploring poetry and sharpening their analytical skills in preparation for assessments.
Creative Arts have been a real highlight this term. From sculpting characters to designing wearable art and musical performances, students have embraced ambitious projects with enthusiasm. Plans are even underway for a student-led college rave—an exciting culmination of their work in Music and Arts Award Silver.
Beyond the classroom, our Dungeons & Dragons campaign continues to inspire creativity and teamwork, and a group of students are preparing to attend MCM Comic Con in London. Our wide range of Quality of Life activities—from rock climbing and travel training to fashion workshops and theatre trips—are helping students build confidence, independence, and life skills in real-world settings.
In Sport, students have continued working towards their BTEC qualifications and some have gained hands-on experience through gym instructor training. We’re all looking forward to upcoming events such as the College Sports Day and the much-anticipated students vs. teachers rounders match!
Other highlights include:
-
All students passing their Home Cooking Skills qualifications
-
Game development projects and coding in Media and Computer Science
-
Exciting work by the College Council and outdoor area improvement plans
We want to thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. The resilience and enthusiasm of our students this term has been exceptional, and it’s been a joy to see them grow, achieve, and prepare for their next steps.
We wish you all a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable May half term. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the final stretch of the academic year.
Warm regards,
Leanne Clarke
